This is a talk I gave today at Aalto University. It’s a wide ranging talk and Q&A session lasting about 2 hours.
You can listen and see the visuals using the Perspective app on your iPad. Download the app (free from the App Store if you don’t already have it) and open the link below using the iPad.
How Did the Mobile Industry Get Disrupted.
It is worth noting that this entire presentation was self-recorded and self-pubished by Horace by only using the Perspective App. This includes the sound, which was recorded simply using the internal-mic on the iPad. No external miss, video cameras, human editors, or publishing intermediaries were harmed in the process.
Slick, Farshad. Software is a marathon as you surely know.
I am not sure “unedited video” counts as a positive for the viewers. A lot of tech podcasts are full of wasted time, because speakers are less than fully prepared to hash out their thoughts quickly or they’ve got problems finding that one book to read an excerpt from or the dialogue is full of ahhs and umms…
It would be far more impressive (and far more useful) if those of us with devices other than iPads could listen.
Agree 🙂 and we are working to address this.
Man, Perspective is only available on IPad, not IPhone. What a waste!
We’re working on it. Stay tuned!
Is link working? When Perspective opens I get an error saying invalid URL… Just me?
Link is broken for me as well. In fact, you can’t get to the Perspective servers at all.
Hi Kelly. Drop us an email and we can resolve it. Pixxa.com.
Does everyone have to send you an email? It’s not opening on my iPad either. Same error about an invalid URL.
Same here: dead link
Send us an email and we will help you resolve this.

Some users have reported issues with opening stories from URLs.
A quick fix for anyone who is having an issue downloading the story: If you don’t have important stories (eg authored or purchased) then just delete the App and reinstall it. Should work fine after that.
We are also working to push a network configuration that should fix this for everyone without requiring any actions.
Sorry for the inconvenience. Let us know at pixxa.com if you have any issues.
OK, so what people that do not own an iPad are suppose to do?
I was in the audience and it was clear that Horace is an Apple fan, but not all of us are!
You don’t have to be an Apple fan to own an iPad. There’s no pop quiz or anything. It’s a good tool. My laptop is gathering dust. For the first time in more than a decade I don’t even travel with it any more. That one simple thing makes it well worth the money.
We’ve fixed the network configuration problem that was causing issues for some people. If your App exhibits this problem please kill the App (not delete it but just killing the process by double-tapping home when outside the App) and then start it, wait a couple of seconds and then try Featured Stories. If they show up you should be all set, and be able to follow the link on the site to open stories. If you have any issues please contact us at pixxa.com.
Horace, on many (most?) of your topics, the comments from us in the peanut gallery reflect the quality of the original post and amplify the underlying message. Sometimes your ideas cause us to add new facts and perspective.
I’m afraid that’s true of this one, too.
Is any one else having problem viewing this in perspective ? I get the error message that the like provided is not valid on my iPad 3 ( os6). Frustrating.
Hi @Maya. There was a temporary network configuration glitch during upgrade to 1.2 which affected some folks. We’ve fixed the problem. Please kill the App (not delete it but just force quit it) and then restart it, wait a couple of seconds and then tap Featured Stories. If they show up you should be all set, and be able to follow the link on the site. Let us know if you have any further issues by email to Pixxa.com.
I would like some of your thoughts on intel. They are trying to avoid disruption from arm arquiteture and have launched smartphones with motorola and lenovo. Some questions:
1— is it too late? Launching the processor has shown that they have the technology, but have they cracked the business model? will they need a new business unit with autonomy to pursue this market?
2— how they should play in a integrated world where apple and samsung have their own processors? Will they be able to capture value as they did in the modular world of the pcs?
I wrote about Intel here: http://www.asymco.com/2011/01/10/who-killed-the-intel-microprocessor/
When perspective opens- states Error downloading document – link not valid?
Hi Alan there was a problem for a brief period of time where some instances of the App downloaded a broken network configuration after upgrade. Probably the easiest way is to delete the App and load it again. If you have created stories you’d like to keep please contact us and we will guide you through a more elaborate procedure.
Sorry about the trouble. We have fixed the code so this doesn’t happen again.
